PAEPAE O HE'EIA VOLUNTEER WORKPaepae O He’eia is the oldest non-profit fishpond organization on the island of O’ahu. Out of the six different styles of fishponds that the Hawaiians would build, He’eia was created using the loko iʻa kuapā technique. Not only is the organization one of the oldest of its kind, the fishpond itself is one of the largest fishponds in the entire Hawaiian Islands.
Due to a massive flood in 1965 that destroyed around 200 feet of the fishpond wall, along with a mangrove overgrowth that rendered other parts of the wall unpassable, the fishpond went out of use for 25 years before volunteers began to restore it. Today, Paepae has community workdays that allow people to participate in the restoration process.
