HONOLULU ZOO VOLUNTEER WORK

The Honolulu Zoo is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire stewardship in our living world. The zoo provides conservation, education, and experiences to our community. It emphasizes the Pacific tropical island ecosystems broken down into three tropical ecological zones: the Pacific Islands, the Asian and American Tropical Forests, and the African Savanna. The zoo emphasizes traditional values of ecosystems and our traditional values of caring and hospitality. Malama means caring and Ho’okipa means hospitality. The Honolulu Zoo is the only zoo in the United States that began from a King’s grant of royal lands for the people.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
Ages welcome to volunteer vary on position. 

• Docent Program: Educational “Zoo Talkers”: 18 years
• Junior Leaders: 12-16 years with preferred graduates of Camp Koa
• ​Zookeeper Assistants: 18 years

Volunteer Requirements:

• The minimum time commitment for volunteering at the Honolulu Zoo is 6 months, one shift per week.
  • Docent Program: 2.5 hour shifts
  • Junior Leaders: Varies by project, event or camp
  • Zookeeper Assistants: 4 hour shifts

Volunteer Expectations:

• The desire to educate and have a heart for conservation by helping with zoo keeper support and contribute to the Zoo’s mission of inspiring the stewardship of our natural world.
