NORTH HAWAII HOSPICE VOLUNTEER WORK

The Maui Ocean Center is the “Aquarium of Hawai’i” with a strong-willed group of people who love the island of Maui, as well as its unique culture and lifestyle. Opening their doors in 1998, the team at the Maui Ocean Center offer the best close-up views and encounters of the marine life, while advocating and protecting Hawai’i’s marine life as well. 

The mission of the Maui Ocean Center is “to foster understanding, wonder, and respect for Hawai‘i’s Marine Life”. 

With a numerous amount of collections, activities, interactions, and exhibits, the Maui Ocean Center maintains their mission in serving guests an understanding of the marine life in Hawai’i. The non-profit organization wishes to inspire youth in taking action to establish a healthy and sustainable environment, all the while leaving a positive legacy for those in the future. VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
You must be at least 16 years old to volunteer.

Volunteer Requirements:
​Those who choose to provide direct patient care assist patients, caregivers, and family members by doing the little things that make a big difference. These include:

• ​Being companions to the patients and their family members
• Spending time with patients when family members need time away to rejuvenate or to take care of other matters
• Running errands or assisting with household chores
• Providing healthful meals
• Helping with bathing or personal care
• Sitting, listening, and caring

Other ways to help:

• ​Assisting in the office
• Maintaining the lending library
• Organizing and attending fundraising events
• Speaking at community education engagements

You must attend training. The staff of NHH offer training 2 times a year for those interested in becoming Volunteers. The training is 15-18 hours, involves the NHH medical director, staff and volunteers. It covers:

• The hospice philosophy and services
• Death and dying and terminal illnesses
• The grieving process
• Universal precautions
• Family dynamics
• Communication skills
• Spirituality and cultural differences
