Volunteerism : The Beginners Guide

Have you ever wanted to help your community? Or maybe you need some volunteer hours for school but don’t know how to obtain them?

My name is Arianna H. and I’m a senior at HTA. I first joined a community service club in middle school and I remember being so excited and eager to find incredible organizations I could be a part of. And then it hit me how do I even find volunteer work and what do I want to do?

In this “Beginners Guide to Volunteerism,” I will help guide you as you figure out what kind of volunteer work you want to do and where you can find that type of work!
 Before we dive straight into it, let's gather some basic information about volunteerism. First, what does volunteerism mean? According to dictionary.com volunteerism means the policy or practice of volunteering one's time or talents for charitable, educational, or other worthwhile activities, especially in one's community.

​Whether you want to write letters to kids in foster care during the holidays or you simply want to pick up trash from your local park, anyone can make a change in their community – no matter how big or small.

Now first and foremost, you’re exactly where you need to be at 808volunteers.org! I know, I know, what a shameless plug. I have good reason to brag, though! On our website, you can read more about who we are as an organization, our mission, and purpose, and how we are here to help you get involved in your community in the local 808 area or even virtually.
Now here are the two main ways you can go about picking a few organizations you want to possibly work with!

The first way is the way I typically navigate the site: 

1. Hover over Volunteer
2. Click Type of Work
3. Then choose one of the seven (7) categories to explore

The second way is:

1. Hover over Volunteer
2. Click on Islands
3. Pick the island you are currently located in
4. Then take a look at all of the charities

After you have looked at the different charities and organizations, reach out directly to the company or fill out volunteer applications forms if that specific charity or organization offers one.
